Hello my sweet friends!
Well, another week has simply flown by....does it seem that way to you too? Even though it has been unseasonably warm in my area, this wonderful piece by Native Vermont captures more of what I expect from this time of year. Ryan, the artist behind the shop, has a wonderful way with animals...evidence here, here & here. But, I was curious to know more about the inspiration behind this fine fox and Ryan happily provided answers! :)
"This piece was inspired by a fox I saw outside my window last winter. I remember thinking that he was the largest fox I had seen in Vermont. He had just scampered out from the forest and was making his way over the hillside near the house. I watched as he briefly stopped and sat in the powdery snow. He lifted his head up toward the falling snow, almost admiring the view from the clearing, then was off again, moving gracefully over the rocky ledge and through the trees back into the forest. I remember his thick coat was a rich orange color and his chest billowed with white fur. He moved through the forest as if he knew exactly where he was going. With ease he bound along a trail that wound through trees and over rock ledges and thick brush--a trail I could not follow.
The piece reminds me those chance encounters that occur when you've come upon some animal in the forest or on a trail. Like many people who set out on a hike, whether it is through a forest, logging trail, or across an open piece of land, I'm always hoping, or expecting to see something. Still, when you come upon a fox, deer, moose, it's always a surprise, always unexpected. If you're lucky enough to see them before they see you, you feel like your witnessing something you're not allowed to see, that you're somehow privileged. It makes me think how often I've probably passed by a fox or deer bedded down or out of site, watching me as I walked by completely unaware of its presence. The piece reminds me of these types of experiences, particularly with fox. The fox's playful nature is unlike most other animals you'd find on a walk in the woods. To me foxes are carefree and somewhat mercurial. I love that a fox could be amused by its own breath in the winter air. The fox reminds me to take pleasure in the simple things in life and that a quiet stroll in the woods can be a celebration of a season, or even a day."
