Hello sweet friends!
Happy friday! I am absolutely thrilled to have sweet, sweet Ryan from
Desire Lines here today! I absolutely am in love with Ryan's work and perhaps you have seen it traveling around blogland? It makes me SO happy and brings a smile to my face!
When I asked Ryan what the inspiration was behind this piece he had this to say:
"To be honest, the inspiration behind the whale wasn't that exciting...he was the very first design I ever came up with, and abi had just given me a piece of paper and a piece of silver left over from another of her projects. I just started doodling randomly...little characters and shapes and animals, trying to get some inspiration. I wasn't really getting anywhere, so I started looking at the piece of silver itself, and noticed a kind of swoop she had cut out. Immediately, it reminded me of the swoop along a whales's back, towards its tail, so, using the shape already there, I designed a whale around it. Purely coincidentally, he ended up being he perfect size for a necklace. The idea for the water droplets developed as I was piercing him from the silver, so, by the time I was ready to file and sand him, the whole design was completed and ready to go. He turned out so well, he ended up inspiring the whole collection!
He makes me smile. There is something quite like alchemy about the way half a millimetre here, or there, can totally change the character of the animals...make them look deliriously happy, or concerned, or studious, and I still love the way each little creature is born, or brought to life as I make it. The whale will always have a special place as he started it all...had he not come first, my jewellery collection would, I imagine, look very, very different."
